I Can’t Make the Choice for You
I get messages like this all the time:
"I’ve been thinking about getting rats for a while, do you think they’re right for me?"
"Should I get male or female rats?"
"How many should I get?"
And honestly… I can’t make that choice for you.
Here’s the thing: if you ask a seller whether you should buy their product, of course they’re going to say yes! We love rats, we think they’re amazing pets, and we want everyone to experience that. But that doesn’t mean they’re automatically the perfect fit for your life.
I like to add a bit of practicality to my program and be transparent when I write posts like this, because rats are incredible, but they’re really not for everyone.
Are rats right for you?
Rats are affectionate, social, and super smart. They bond with their humans, love attention, and can learn tricks. They’re playful little companions who make awesome pets... if you’re ready for the commitment.
They’re not always low-maintenance:
Rats must live with other rats (never alone).
They have short lifespans (usually 2–3 years).
They need daily interaction and enrichment.
Their cages require regular cleaning and upkeep.
Vet care for small animals can sometimes be hard to find or costly.
If that sounds like too much work for a “cute little pet,” they might not be the right fit. If it sounds like a fun, interactive challenge, you could be a perfect match.
Male or female rats?
Honestly, either can make a great pet! Differences are mostly about energy and personality:
Males: often more laid-back and cuddly.
Females: usually more active, curious, and busy.
Neither is “better” - it’s just about what kind of energy you want in your cage.
How many rats should you get?
Rats are social creatures. Never just one! Two is the absolute minimum, but three or more usually creates a happier, healthier dynamic. They groom, play, and rely on each other emotionally.
The Bottom Line
I can’t tell you “yes, you should get rats” or “no, don’t do it.” That’s a decision only you can make. But if you do your research, think about your lifestyle (honestly), and consider the practical side, you’ll figure out if rats are the right fit.
