Pricing Increase For 2026

Updated: Dec 12

Running a rattery isn’t just a side hobby for me. It’s something I pour hours into every single day. For 2026, I’ve updated the pricing at Forest City Rats, and I want to be open about why.

It’s not about trying to squeeze extra money out of anyone. It’s about fairness, sustainability, and making sure both my rats and their future families get the best experience possible.

1. Time is Valuable

Every day, I spend hours feeding, cleaning, socializing, and monitoring the health of our rats. I work from home purposefully so I can live a pet-filled life, and in that context, the rattery functions almost like a part-time job.

Beyond caring for the rats themselves, there’s also a significant amount of time spent on advertising, social media, and managing inquiries, ensuring buyers get the information and support they need.

2. FCR Rats Are Special

This year, I’ve finally established our dumbo line, which has been a work in progress for some time. I also have plans to introduce additional traits and improvements as the line progresses.

FCR rats aren’t generic pets - they’re the result of careful breeding.

3. Costs Have Increased Across the Board

From bedding to food, from toys to veterinary care, costs have risen significantly over the past few years. In order to continue providing the highest quality care for our rats, our prices need to reflect these realities.

4. Previous Pricing Was Unsustainable

Until now, my standard rat pricing was $25, slightly less than the PetSmart price of $23.99+tax. To be clear, a rat from a big-box pet store is not comparable to a carefully bred, socialized, healthy pet from a small rattery.

5. Ethics and Profit Are Separate

Setting fair prices allows me to maintain our standards, avoid cutting corners, and provide lifelong support for every rat I breed.

It also helps weed out clients who aren’t serious or trustworthy. A rattery isn’t just selling an animal; it’s forming a relationship with the buyer.

Price can also act as a filter, ensuring that our rats go to dedicated homes and aren't just an impulse buy.

6. A Sustainable, Ethical Approach

By adjusting the prices at FCR, I am valuing my time, expertise, and effort. I can continue to invest in quality care. This will ensure that my breeding program remains sustainable going forward.
