Pulse Check

Considering getting pet rats? Not sure if you're ready? Not sure if they're right for you? Here are some questions to consider!

Household / Environment
  • Do you have a safe, quiet space for a cage that won’t be exposed to direct sun, drafts, or smoke?

  • Is anyone in your home allergic to small animals or concerned about rodents?

  • Are all household members aware and on board with having rats?

  • Do you have a plan for noise, smell, and daily interaction needs?

  • Is your living situation stable enough that you won’t need to relocate or rehome them suddenly?

Financial
  • Can you afford the initial setup (cage, bedding, food, toys, enrichment)?

  • Are you prepared for ongoing costs like food, bedding, treats, toys, enrichment and replacements for chewed items?

  • Do you have an emergency vet fund for unexpected illness?

  • Can you comfortably handle costs without financial stress if something goes wrong?

Vet Care
  • Do you have access to an exotic vet nearby?

    • Are they currently accepting new patients?

  • Are you willing to seek medical care quickly when symptoms appear (rats hide illness well)?

  • Can you manage potential treatments, medications, or repeat visits?

    • Proactive vet care is one of the biggest differences between a short lifespan and a healthy, supported life.

  • Are you comfortable making end-of-life decisions when the time comes?

Cleaning & Daily Care
  • Can you commit to spot-cleaning the cage daily?

  • Are you prepared for a full cage clean on a weekly basis?

  • Are you okay with occasional smell (even with good cleaning habits)?

  • Can you maintain consistent feeding, watering, and enrichment routines?

Long-Term Commitment (2–3 Years)
  • Are you ready for a pet that will age relatively quickly?

  • Do you understand that rats are highly social and should not be kept alone?

  • Can you commit to caring for them through their full lifespan, not just the “cute” stage?

  • Are you prepared for emotional attachment and eventual loss?

  • Are you a student, living with roommates, or in a housing situation you know is not permanent?

Handling & Comfort Level
  • Are you personally comfortable handling rats, or willing to learn how to handle them properly and safely?

  • Is this a pet YOU genuinely feel at ease interacting with, not just observing?

  • Are you willing to build trust slowly through consistent bonding time?

  • Can you stay patient if they are shy, squirmy, or nervous at first?

  • Would you still be committed if handling takes time and practice to feel natural?

  • If you feel you would only handle them with extreme avoidance or hesitation, are you being honest with yourself about whether this is the right pet for you?

Pulse Check - Ask yourself:
  • Am I getting rats because I’ve researched them thoroughly, or because they’re trending/cute?

  • Have I watched or read care guides beyond social media clips?

  • If I had to wait 30 days before getting them, would I still want them just as much?

  • Do I understand their care needs beyond aesthetics?

  • Have I considered what happens if I lose interest or get overwhelmed?

Deeper Reflection
  • Am I prepared to care for more than one rat, since they must live in pairs or groups?

  • Do I understand that bonding time and daily interaction aren’t optional, but necessary for their well-being?

  • Can I handle potential behavioural challenges like chewing, bar climbing, or territorial habits?

  • How will I manage care during vacations, travel, or busy life periods?

  • If my circumstances change (school, work, moving), do I have a backup care plan?

  • Am I willing to adjust my lifestyle (sleep, cleaning routines, room setup) for their needs?

  • Do I have realistic expectations about lifespan, health issues, and aging care?

  • Have I thought about what I will do if one rat passes away before the other?

  • Am I choosing rats because I genuinely want to care for them, not just because I want a cute caged pet?
