As previously mentioned, the rat breeding community can be complicated. It’s easy for breeders to lose sight of what really matters and become preoccupied with how they’re perceived rather than how their rats and buyers are actually supported.
Forest City Rats was built very intentionally away from that culture. I designed my business for my clients' needs.
A Trust-Based Model Over a Gatekeeping Model
I believe that most people seeking an appropriately priced, well-bred, well-raised rat already care deeply. They don’t need to jump through hoops or be tested. They need clarity, support, and access to good information. This approach creates a healthier dynamic for everyone involved, especially the rats.
Transparent Standards Without Performative Ethics
I prioritize clear, evidence-based practices that actually improve welfare. I am very open about our decisions, methods, and limitations. I don’t embellish, moralize, or shame anyone. I believe that ethics should be demonstrated through consistent care, responsible breeding choices, and honest communication, not through aggressive language, rigid demands, or performative displays on social media.
Independence From Community Politics
I choose not to participate in community politics. I am happy to collaborate with people who value mutual respect, transparency, and the well-being of the rats. Steering clear of drama and maintaining professional boundaries is one of my highest priorities.
Centering Rats and Families, Not Approval
Everything comes back to the rats and the people who love them. I focus on producing healthy, loving pet rats. My goal is to make the experience welcoming and fun for everyone involved. I believe that genuine, grounded, relationship-based care speaks for itself.
