Things You Won't See At FCR

There are a lot of different ways people choose to operate ratteries. This isn't a criticism of every breeder who does things differently, but rather a look at the standards and practices that define Forest City Rats.

These are some things you'll never see here.

Rats Outside for Photos, Playdates, or Social Visits

Our rats do not go outside. Not for cute photos. Not for public meet-and-greets. Not for playdates with unfamiliar rats. Not for social media content. Outdoor environments can expose rats to parasites, diseases, predators, toxic substances, and unnecessary stress. The risks simply aren't worth the photo opportunity.

Breeding Racks, Bins, or Laboratory-Style Housing

Our rats live in appropriate pet homes, not breeding racks or storage bins. We believe our breeders and babies deserve spacious, enriching habitats that prioritize welfare over efficiency.

More Litters Than We Can Comfortably Keep

We do not breed based on demand alone. Every litter is planned carefully, and we maintain the ability to house, care for, and support the animals we produce. If homes fall through, the rats stay here until suitable homes are found. Producing more animals than you can reasonably accommodate is not responsible breeding.

Endless Waitlists With Constant Litters

You'll never see us producing litter after litter simply to keep babies available year-round. Breeding decisions are based on the goals of our program, not on maintaining a constant supply of rats for sale.

Anonymous Sales or Multiple Identities

Forest City Rats operates under one name and one identity. We do not use multiple breeder names, alternate accounts, hidden identities, or anonymous sales profiles. People know who they are dealing with, and we believe accountability matters. Trust is built through transparency.

Pressure Sales

You'll never be pressured into taking rats, placing a deposit immediately, or making a decision before you're ready. Owning rats is a commitment, and prospective owners deserve time to make informed decisions.

Breeding Every Rat We Own

Not every rat is breeding quality, and that's okay. Many of our rats live their entire lives as beloved pets. Breeding should be selective and purposeful, not something done simply because a rat is available.

Guarantees We Can't Realistically Keep

You'll never see promises of "tumor-free lines," "guaranteed lifespans," or claims that rats from our program will never develop health issues. Rats are living animals. Even with careful breeding, genetics are complex and health outcomes can never be guaranteed. We believe in honesty over marketing.

Taking in More Animals Than We Can Handle

Forest City Rats has limits, and we respect them. We do not accept surrenders when we are at capacity or when we cannot responsibly provide the level of care an animal deserves. Saying "no" is sometimes the most responsible answer.

Breeder partnerships, sister ratteries, or mentorship programs

Forest City Rats operates independently. We do not have partner breeders, sister ratteries, breeding collaborations, co-owned breeding programs, or mentorship arrangements with other breeders. Our decisions, standards, and practices are our own, and we are solely responsible for the animals we produce and place.

We believe accountability works best when there is no confusion about who is responsible for a breeding program, its animals, or its policies. If a rat comes from Forest City Rats, it came from Forest City Rats.

Drama, Gossip, or Public Call-Outs for Entertainment

While we may discuss industry issues, ethics, or experiences that shaped our policies, our focus remains on education, transparency, and improving animal welfare, not creating content for conflict. If you've spent any amount of time in rat breeding groups or communities on Facebook, you've probably noticed there's often some piping hot tea to sip on and a new story unfolding every week. Disagreements, screenshots, accusations, call-out posts, and endless comment threads seem to be a recurring feature of the hobby. That's not what Forest City Rats is here for (although you may find us as a fly on the wall watching...). When concerns need to be addressed, we prefer facts over rumours and accountability over spectacle. Our goal isn't to build an audience around drama or turn hobby disputes into entertainment.

Purpose-breeding extreme traits or the "doodles" of the rat world

You won't see us breeding hairless, double rex, manx, or other traits that are associated with known welfare concerns. While these rats can be cute and appealing, our focus is on health, function, comfort, and quality of life above appearance.

We believe breeding decisions should prioritize what benefits the rat, not what is unique, trendy, or marketable. A rat's well-being will always matter more than creating a novelty.

Note: This isn't a criticism of people who own or love rats with these traits; many are wonderful pets. It's simply a reflection of the breeding choices and ethical standards we have chosen for our program.
